What is Octavia’s Cure?

Octavia’s Cure is a monthly conversation series about reimagining healthcare and public health for all of us. We’re inspired by the visionary thinking of author and futurist Octavia Butler, who imagined futures that felt urgent, possible, and grounded in community. We’re bringing that same spirit to real conversations about what it takes to build a better healthcare system.

Hosted by Dr. Stella Safo, a physician and founder of Just Equity for Health, this series brings together clinicians and public health providers, advocates, decision-makers, and everyday people. We talk openly about the healthcare challenges we’re facing, but more importantly, we imagine and design solutions together. Because the best ideas for health come from all of us—not just from institutions or experts alone.

  • Healthcare can feel broken, especially if you’re part of a community that’s been left behind by the system. Too often, conversations about fixing it stay stuck in problems.

    We wanted something different. We wanted to root ourselves in hope, community, and real solutioning. We wanted to ask: what does an optimal healthcare system look like? What would health feel like if we actually centered the people most impacted? What does it take to get there?
